After seeing all the comments about a Subaru forester having more ground clearance than a bronco, it looks like forester may be my next vehicle.

We had an Element SC - it was cool, but it had issues - it would randomly (maybe once a year) lose electrical power at highway speeds ... multiple trips to the dealer to get it resolved were unsuccessful.. .we ended up getting rid of it. I had no idea it was coming back
Son had Element and did the same thing at 120,000 miles. no one could find problem, thought it dangerous on highway and traded it in. otherwise, liked car.

If we end up backing out on our Bronco(doubtful) then we will probably go Lexus GX460 or F150. The 4Runner is far too dated for the price.

Yea as crazy as it sounds, the Subaru Outback is the only car that has made me stop and think. It has similar cargo space, more rear leg room, and can be had fully loaded with their new off-road system and a decent turbocharged engine for about 36,000. Every other vehicle I have tried to compare was a similar price to my BD bronco or slightly less. This was the first one I found that I could live with and was significantly lower in price.

That being said, my wife had a crosstrek and I really hated that cvt transmission. The car was great, but man that transmission bugged me. Not sure I would want that every day.

I have an early Rivian R1T reservation to fall back on in case Ford craps the bed (as they often do). I just think I'll kick myself later if I don't seize the opportunity to buy what is probably the last mass-produced 4x4 with a manual transmission. Electric trucks will only get better, but the Bronco may be the pinnacle of its technological era.

Other than the initial price difference (which is actually not that big after tax credits/fuel/maintenance costs), I'm also pretty sure the Rivian will depreciate at least twice as fast as the Bronco, at least for the first 3-5 years. But faster acceleration than a Ferrari combined with more ground clearance than a Sasquatch is a compelling combo.

With the price of the Bronco at almost $60k for a loaded up unit, I'm tempted to buy a used late model Raptor instead. The Raptor has more power, a better suspension, more towing capacity, and with a cab over the bed, would carry much more stuff. Only thing is I already have a F450, so the Raptor would be a bit redundant.

Stick with Ford and look at the Ecosport. Some pretty cool things people are posting online with it's overlanding capability.
