Not really. Just looks. The back-lighting doesn't put out any light that will illuminate down the road, so it's simply for looks.

Sorry not backlighting of the switches I mean the backlight in the lights themselves

They're kinda like DRLs but are cosmetic only

As others have said, just for fun and looks. A lot of people like the amber backlights at night because it gives off a nice look. Sometimes people will also get a backlight color that matches their vehicle for aesthetic purposes.
