Does anybody know what's going on with the three filled in vent holes above/below/next to the outside letters in the front grill?

It's most pronounced on the Badlands and almost looks to be three turn signal covers or the proximity sensors.

On the outer banks they seem to be a sensor cover to the sides of the outside letters, and just regular grill above/below the letters, but you can still see extra material there.

Perhaps designed one way, but engineering needed attachment points behind there?

Any idea why BL & FE don't have active grille shutters?
If it's an off-road dirt thing, then should it be on any Bronco?

You see this on a lot of vehicles. Basically, the engineers have calculated how much airflow is needed to balance cooling requirements versus drag. And they only open the grille up enough to allow that. Mustang is afflicted by this aesthetic blight all the time, in some cases only about 1/3 of the grille is actually open. It looks like poo when the light hits so that it reflects off of the blocked off bits but (obviously) not the open bits.

Its a bit dumb that on the Badlands grille that only blanked off three little bits on either side, but its almost always about airflow management. I suppose there might be cases where its covering hardware or a sensor as well though.

Active grill shutters are typically designed to close and limit airflow into the radiator and decrease wind resistance and increase MPG. (So, definitely not while under heavy load... more like while cruising on the highway in the Outerbanks model... default is open)
