Depends on how old your trade-in is.
In most cases if your trade is over about 5 years old the dealership is only taking it on trade to wholesale it, they won't be keeping it on their lot to sell. The dealership isn't coming up with the trade-in value, they are putting it out to bid to wholesalers. So if a wholesaler says they will take that 7 year old Lexus for a max of $XX that is what the dealer will offer - regardless of what KBB says about trade-in value. In these cases the dealer is only being a middle man between you and a wholesaler.
At reputable dealers, on newer vehicles that the dealership will keep on their lot, KKB is going to be pretty accurate, and you shouldn't have a problem negotiating to the KKB listed trade-in value, and be able to see exactly how much more you could make by selling it yourself, and if the hassle of selling it yourself is worth it to you.
