I figured we would know the city/ highway and combined MPG numbers by now since they are in production, yet it is still remains a mystery. Is this normal for a
new vehicle release, or is it because it is more complicated with a Bronco to figure out compared to most vehicles?

it seems like the Bronco has so many variables besides just 2 door/4door and engine size. We can get different size tires on same model, we have the option of 2 wheel drive, 4 wheel drive, normal, eco, sports mode, etc., doors off/on, soft top/mic top, front row top panels off, front and middle row tops off or all of the top pieces off...could this be why they aren’t giving us the numbers yet?

The feds require specific testing that requires each model have multiple vehicles tested over specified mileage and conditions. The Broncos built in 2020 were not the final version so most recent builds are being tested to submit to the feds.

Yes. All that plus engine and transmissions calibrations are stilling being tweaked as more data comes back from the drives.

Although they're small incremental changes, every change has to be recertified on the rolls for emissions transparency. Fuel economy comes from the emission tests. There likely is no appreciable difference in these changes, but Ford would hate to publish a number then have to come back and lower it at a later date.

The people at the Bronco event I went to wouldn't even start the truck. The girl there said "We don't have the keys". Meanwhile 10 minutes before someone had started one...hmmm

Another member @mtap that went earlier in the day, to the same event, posted here that the guy was intentionally holding his hand over the screen so he couldn't see it.

It's a mystery!

Maybe they are taking longer than they used to so they don't get fooled again by any sort of defeat device...I'm looking at you, VW.

They should bust out my ‘check engine light’ repair from the 90s. A black piece of electrical tape made the issue disappear permanently, 100% of the time.

In automotive there have been plenty of unintentional defeat devices, which is why there is extensive training to avoid accidentally doing this.

That is not what happened at VW, they deliberately created a mode that detected if they were on the rolls and ran a calibration that was emissions compliant. Off the rolls they ran a different calibration that gave them better performance. They were not "fooled" by any means.

Which is why now, Europe / China / Brazil are requiring Real Driving Emissions (RDE) over the road with some conformance /adjustment factors for drive cycle, temperature etc. as part of their emissions compliance.

Yeah, my memory was fuzzy about the whole thing. Thanks for the clarification. (y) I just like blaming VW for everything since they dumbed down their cars since the 90s.
