Being from Michigan my knowledge of Yellowstone is practically zero - however, its a place I have always wanted to visit and camp at.

Is there any off-roading to be had there?

The use of ATV’s or off-roading vehicles is prohibited inside Yellowstone, but there are plenty of authorized trails in the surrounding towns that allow access to roads surrounding the park.

But, don't let this stop you from going. It is an absolutely amazing experience.

Yellowstone NP only has one "dirt road" Blacktail Drive. It's not at all rough, I actually drove may smallish motorhome on it, it is one way. Nice scenery, usually Bison. The surrounding National Forests have plenty of 4x4 trails.

Yes, sorry. Didn't meant that you shouldn't go!
@guerro, Richard, sorry if it seemed that I was implying that you were. I certainly didn't intend to do that. We've been twice, and we had a great experience both times. We were in Livingston for our third journey the day before the eclipse, and were ready to head in that day until the news media started telling folks to be prepared for at least a 7 hour journey through the park because of the traffic. I think it was going to be a full eclipse there. So, we headed back to Laurel, and went south on 310 (we were going to Greybull anyway), and enjoyed a partial eclipse all by ourselves since there was no traffic at all on 310. :)

Not at all! Sometimes I type too fast and don't think through. All good. I want to go up to Wyoming once i have my Broncooooo (haha) and hit the trails.

Oh yes! Would highly recommend Gaia GPS or OnX Offroad. Both have thousands of trails and mark out the appropriate lands with details.

I'm testing OnX Offroad right now and haven't had any issues. Trail accuracy has been 100% and can easily download maps for offline use (been on a couple without cell service so have been able to rely on the map, which still tracks your location even when offline!)

We're looking forward to that also. We will pick our Bronco up in Iowa, and plans are to head west from there. We were in the wife's Mustang the last time we were near Yellowstone., so no trails for us then. But it was still a beautiful ride, and I'm getting this thread way off track now. :)

BTW, we live in North Carolina. So, our road trips are usually 5K+ miles in length. This is a beautiful country the Lord has made, and we do love exploring it.

I live 16 miles from Yellowstone Park.

No off road travel allowed inside the park boundaries. Outside the park boundary you have Montana, Wyoming, and Idaho. Huge amounts of federal land that you do pretty much whatever you want on.

The park itself is unbelievably awesome. If you have never been, you should. The surrounding area is just as awesome, even though it does not have the prestige, or protection, of the park.

Remember, leave no trace. I recognize that I am very fortunate to live here, and I do not mind sharing it with others. But I do get enraged when I see litter, trash, and destruction of natural resources.
