Just got done installing a fridge slide on top on the Tuffy cargo security drawer - thought I‘d share if anyone else was thinking of doing something similar. Didn’t take too long to do but was definitely more of a pain than I thought it would be. Since the security drawer says it can only hold 50lbs on top I removed the tie down straps and added a 3/4” piece of carpeted plywood on top to provide more support and then bolted the fridge slide on top. Seems plenty sturdy so far. The fridge slide had to overhang the security drawer a bit in order to make sure I could open the top of the fridge enough…it doesn’t open all the way due to hitting the back window, but it opens plenty wide to get things in and out just fine.

edit: the fridge is a Dometic CFX3 55IM in case anyone was wondering.

Looks nice. Can you remove it when you're not overlanding easily enough or is it pretty much permanent?

I like it, but that setup just takes too much cargo real estate to work for me.
Thanks - it does take up a lot of real estate. I also pull a trailer when I am camping/overlanding…so most of my gear is usually back there so space isn’t much of an issue for me. If it’s just me and my son and dog, then we go trailer-less and cram all our gear in the bronco.
Nice job!

Unrelated, but what’s covering the back of your 2nd row seats?
It’s the neoprene seat covers from the Ford accessories. I’m sure there are better products out there but I had points to burn and figured I’d try them out. https://accessories.ford.com/produc...prene-rear-seat-covers-w-o-armrest-in-black-1

I can easily remove the fridge. In order to remove the slide I would need to pull the security drawer out and then just undue about 5 or 6 bolts…wouldn’t take too long. It’s a little awkward reaching the back bolts though. The entire security drawer can come out pretty quick as well…just four nuts to remove (with the drawer out as well). I’m guessing to remove or install everything it would take about 15min now that I know what I’m doing.

What size dometic did you mount up? Was thinking about doing the same, but mounting direct to tuffy box and taking my chances that the load would be dispersed across the track of the slide.

It’s a CFX3 55IM. Might be the biggest you can fit without going horizontal.

The fridge has a 120v and a 12v in. I can plug directly into the 12v outlet in the trunk. I usually have a jackery battery in might trunk that the fridge runs off of..then I plug the jackery into the 12v to charge it when I’m driving. I have the 1000W jackery…which can run the fridge for 2-3 days depending on how hot it is.

Not to be stupid, but what is the point of it sliding out? Is it just to be able to reach in the top easier? The whole slide seems like a bit of a bother for...not much functionality. Would it not be easier to just have it mounted on top of the drawer?

Nice to have the capability to make ice cubes! Wonder if the 45 would fit more flush to end of the box. May have to make a concession in the interest of space savings.

Have one of those goose gear tailgate table mounts and need to see how much real estate that take up.

Clean looking setup. Well done.

It’s a legitimate question…it is much easier to reach things especially once you have a bunch of other stuff in the trunk. Depending on your setup, keeping the fridge inside the vehical, or even within a built in cabinet in the trunk, may not provide much space to open the top. I can only open mine about 6in when it’s all the way in as it runs it o the roll bar. When it’s slid all the way out I pretty much have full access.

I probably could have pushed the slide back another inch or two…I was just eyeballing the position to make sure I could slide the fridge out far enough to allow me to open the lid without hitting the hardtop. I also figured I’d rather have a little extra storage behind the fridge rather than in the front as things would just fall out as soon as you open the tailgate.

Great job! This is what I was looking at doing too.
Does the Tuffy security box bow at all in the center from the weight of the fridge?
