The antenna is mounted that way because that is how it gets the best reception. Away from the "greenhouse " of the vehicle. Look at an 18-wheeler, the cb antennas are normally mounted like horns sticking forward from the big west coast mirrors. Better reception and longer range.It's probably offset like that to avoid potential items on the roof rack/tie downs.
That said, I hate mast antennas and don't know why they couldn't have embedded it in the windshield or something.
For the record I like the radio. But then again I'm old school.
