Updated: Ford just filed two patent applications with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, one for a “Door Hinge Assembly” for selective door removal and the other for a “Door Opening Restraint” for safety once the doors have been removed — both clearly designed for the 2021 Ford Bronco.
The patent drawings and descriptions show a door hinge pin and latch providing the mechanism to secure and remove the doors — of what other vehicle(s), but the upcoming Bronco family lineup — in addition to a door restraint to be used when the Bronco’s doors are removed.
The door opening restraint has a “distal end” that can be extended via a telescoping design allowing it to stretch from the A pillar to the B pillar when the door is removed. These features are sure to make the off-roading crowd happy when it is finally revealed.
