Anyone thinking of heading to KoH this year?

I’m going but have never been and don’t really know what to expect or what to avoid.

I just want to be in the desert and watch trucks do cool shit. I couldn't care less about vendor booths or Hammer Town. Or so I think…Any insight would be appreciated and if you’re going maybe we can convoy or meet up and high five.

Thank you for using "couldn't care less" correctly. That is all I have to contribute.

Don't camp in a tent because it's to windy. Lots of traffic, dust and idiots.

@Snacktime sounds annoying. Any way to avoid or mitigate that?

@omg_bbq go early and don't park close. People will pin you in at the popular obstacles. I would stay in Barstow at a hotel, it's a military town so asked for a discount. How many days are you going?

@Snacktime I was thinking just at the end for the 4400 class trucks.

It gets damn cold, I managed to sleep through the night in a 0˚F bag inside a pretty big tent that didn't seem to be all that affected by the wind. I'm planning on the same thing this year but will bring along a heated blanket and space heater to avoid having my water bottle freeze beside me overnight.

It definitely can get a bit wild and depending on your sensibilities it might be too much but it's definitely a fun experience. However, based on my experience last year I think I'll head home Saturday afternoon – the last night is a bit too intense for me with the full-blown rock concert going on past 3 am and people night wheeling everything from two strokes to power strokes until and throughout morning (it doesn't really stop ever.) The traffic is also pretty horrendous getting out on Sunday: this is when it pays to have a Bronco (or other capable vehicle) and some downloaded navigation to avoid the traffic jam on Boone Rd.

I'm not sure if there are any reservation slots still available but I would suggest checking out the Bronco Nation Basecamp, they had some nice events planned for us last year that included getting to see parts of the race up close and going back into sections of the course that others aren't permitted to during the races.

@_jeff insane write up, thanks for your time. Maybe DM me or something and we can caravan if you’re up for that. I’m fine with all manner or sensibilities but what you described on Sunday makes me also want to dip out on Saturday. Also I have maps but would love to know about the secret ways out with our capable broncos.

@omg_bbq I don't have any specific routes out but there are a few options depending on how much of a "short-cut" you're interesting in. You can surface Public Routes within Gaia GPS to see others routes leading back to 247.

One of the benefits to BN Basecamp is having more space than described above which is true, folks will squeeze into the tiny spaces to setup camp and it can become difficult to navigate Hammertown from one day to the next with people coming and going so often.
