New England Broncos

Group for people in New England to talk, show off, and go off roading
I know there are tons of things on the main forum but it's almost to much to vet for a none car guy so I'm looking for smaller audience feedback. Are you guys including tow package on your order now that it looks like it could slow down production?

I've never had a tow kit before and can't imagine using anything beyond a bike rack or luggage carrier. But have no idea how much the wiring would help future proof the car since I plan on keeping it forever.

I'm adding the factory one. If you only want it to carry a bike rack or something, it will certainly be cheaper to add it after the fact.

If you think you may want to eventually do some light towing, there will probably be a 4-pin aftermarket plug-and-play harness available that ties into the rear lighting harness (similar things are available for the Ranger if you want to get an idea).

If you think you may want to get a little more crazy eventually, the factory harness also has the 7-pin connector as well as wiring provisions under the dash for a plug-and-play brake controller to be added later. The tow rating of the Bronco is 3500 lbs, and any trailer and load that falls within that shouldn't need a brake controller... but if you are in a very mountainous area, want to push the limits of the tow capacity against recommendations, or can already think of reasons you'd otherwise want the 7-pin harness at the rear, I say do it and roll the dice that it might delay your build. That type of functionality will be considerably more difficult/expensive to add after the fact.

I looked at what’s included with the package…just a hitch mount and wiring. $600 for that is CRAZY. There’s no oil coolers or other mechanical components that will make this a necessary upgrade. If you don’t need the 7-pin controller, you will be able to get the same kit from Etrailer.com or for $200 and an hour in the driveway, so I skipped paying Ford for the privilege of having it pre-installed. @ZackDanger

I don't like the idea of someone splitting wires or tapping into something later which I think is "plug and play" that could mess with the tail lights or something.

@BostonGuy A decent plug-and-play harness usually don't include any actual splicing. it comes with a male and female harness plug, and you basically just unplug the harness from one of the taillights, and insert the trailer one inline. I don't have any concerns with that type of solution from a reputable company.

@ZackDanger Thank you that doesn't sound so bad for something that really is an off chance I'll do.

I agree with @ZackDanger. I'm getting the factory installed tow package. I'm not planning on pulling a shit-ton of stuff like other folks on this forum. I'm planning on pulling a light trailer with a tractor or trash for the transfer station. Nothing spectacular but small enough for the factory installed tow package.

Plus with the low tow capacity, I would be scared to approach that limit with a larger trailer. Some people want to run up against that 3500# limit. Good for them. I'm not one of those people.

I got the tow package before I heard rumors that it was a sin. And I have a vin and build date so who knows. But I have added aftermarket hitch receiver to other vehicles and it is a cinch. I was really surprised at how easy it is. Literally 6 bolts that anchor it into the frame. Then a dongle that plugs into existing wiring harness that is hidden in the car already. If I was yet to order and at believing the rumors on the tow pkg, I'd wait, get one later either from Ford or Curt (or anyone), and mount it up yourself.
