Bay Area Broncos

Here we go with the new G.O.A.T’s of the bay!!

I'm thinking of doing an easy/picturesque run on Old Coast Road (near Big Sur) in the next few weeks - any interest?

Old Coast Road is an "easy" dirt road that starts from Bixby Bridge, and ends near Andrew Molera SP, 10 miles and 1 hr. later (without stopping, but we will). This would be a great beginner trail for new owners (2H or 4H all the way, and NO CHANCE of damage to your vehicle - I've seen a Camry drive through), and the views are awesome (great views of Bixby Bridge, redwood(?) forests, and the ocean from hilltops).

We'll gather in Gilroy at 9:00 AM, and get on the trail at about 10:00 (near Carmel on Hwy. 1), finishing before noon-time, and lunching at the Big Sur Roadhouse: (https://goo.gl/maps/2a1BURtTbYgRKvfE8).

After lunch, folks can drive back north and do whatever... here's an idea - why not stay overnight in Carmel/Monterey, and hit Hollister Hills on Sunday? Make it a Bronco weekend.

Here's an AllTrails page that describes the trail:
https://www.alltrails.com/trail/us/california/the-old-coast-road?u=i

Tentative dates are Saturdays 9/24; 10/8; 10/15.

Please post here if interested, and indicate your date preference.

I'm interested Patrick. I'll check my calendar and reply again with a preference date for me. Thanks for posting a potential meet up / trail run. I think it's a great idea. 👍

That's a cool little trail. Lots of scenery. South Coast and Prewitt Ridge trails are just south of there and have great views of the coast/Highway 1 too. Wish I could make it but Saturdays are out until early November (kid's sports).

@Sewie If Sundays work better, I have no problems; we'll simply pick the date that works for most of you. I can't do the 10/1~10/2 weekend, though.

@WheelMe My Sundays are booked too for the next few weeks. :( I can do 10/16, either for a trail run or HH get together, but don't plan around me. Whatever works for the group.

Would love to join and 10/15 would work best for me, looks like it ends early enough that I can still make it to the Sharks game

Looks like we have 4 interested parties for now, with two for 10/15, one for 10/16, and one for 9/24. Could the 10/15s make 10/16?

@WheelMe Whoops. Just realized I'm out for 10/16. Kid's birthday weekend.

I'd be down for Saturday 10/15. Sundays are less of a preference for me. Sundays are Family time, Football, etc. for me.

Well, we have three 10/15's - can the 9/24 folks make 10/15?

Looks like we've got ourselves a 10/15 trip! 5 rigs total is perfect, though if anyone else can make it, you're more than welcome to join.

I've set up the run as an event on 6G, with meeting place and time information; I think that it allows one to indicate intent to participate as well - please do, so that I can keep track of who's coming:

So far we have the following committed:

@WheelMe I’ll be a passenger and my husband does the driving. He used to go wheeling with his uncle and the Bay Area Bushwhackers in the late 90s, early 2000s but now we mostly just go on dunes or the trails up at R Wild Horse Ranch.

@WheelMe Hey Patrick, I've got a 10Lb CO2 Cylinder and can help air up too if necessary. I've also got a couple Midland GMRS talkies I can lend out on the trail if anybody needs one and we want to have a little communication during the ride.
WheelMe

@TABadlands Sounds good - between you and me we should be able to air everybody back up then. I also have a spare GMRS that I can bring. Thanks. FRS would work too, if anyone's got that.

Unable to join in October, but thinking about going there this Saturday. Might someone have a location of the start of this road/trail, for GPS purposes?

10/15 is tough because of commitments that AM. But, would generally be up for this. Looking forward to the next time!

I drove the trail yesterday, as pointed out, it is basicly a dirt road, no real obstacles. The south end had some rutted sections, the remainder had a rock or two and a few holes, but other than a few steeper sections, any bronco isn't going to have issues here. I recommend running the trail from south to north, ending at Bixby Bridge, will be slightly more of a challenge running the step switchback section going up rather than down.

This trail is NO challenge to our Broncos, even south to north; it's just a scenic dirt-road drive on the coast, with a good measure of Bronco camaraderie tossed in. If anyone wishes to take the same trail back up north after lunch, I'm happy to oblige (I can play tail-gunner)! Those who elect to take Hwy. 1 back can enjoy a slightly different perspective, and just as pretty and enjoyable. We can decide after lunch.

I checked out Bixby Bridge and the restaurant today - all looked good!

I'll see you all on Saturday morning before 9:30 AM in Gilroy.

Bring your FRS/GMRS radios, if you've got them.

Those on the coast who would like to meet up with me/the group away from Gilroy, PM me or post below.
