SoCal Broncos

Starting the conversation for past, present and future SoCal Bronco owners. Lets go!

Went on a run with a big offroading group called SCORCH (Southern California Offroad Club & Hangouts) to Hungry Valley SVRA on Saturday. Defiantly a diverse set of vehicles and skill levels on this run. I was the only Bronco, but we had pretty much everything under the sun, including a Rivian. It was a fun trip, and near the end we ran across another Bronco stuck in a mud pit and had to help him out. We tried first with at the Lexus and ALMOST got him out. But not quite. So, we hooked my Bronco to the Lexus, and between the two of us it was no problem. He learned some valuable lessons that day:
  1. Don't go alone, or you might have to wait for quite a while before someone comes along to help you if you get stuck. He was lucky our group came a long when we did, and he only had to wait about 5 minutes.
  2. Don't enter a water/mud pit if you don't know how deep it is. My rule is never go first. :)
  3. Have some basic recovery gear. He had NOTHING. Lucky for him that with 30 vehicles we had a pretty good variety of things to choose from.
  4. Don't offer the people that help you money ... the off-roaders creed is to never leave someone in distress out on the trail without helping them. We aren't looking for a payday, just a pay it forward.
But, all's well that ends well. We got him out, popped open the airbox to see if the air filter was wet, and it wasn't so we felt safe having him start it up and drive off for home.

So, we all left there having had a great time, and with a sense of accomplishment.

I'm almost ready for a trip like this, want to finish installing & wiring the fog lights in the bumper and turn everything on; the other lights are wired but not hooked up to the switches. Installed and wired so far are the rock lights, ditch lights & a small light bar that need to be wired to aux switches and the wires cleaned up & zip tied. I should be done this week.

That mud pit didn't look too bad, I wouldn't try it first, but it pays to see others mistakes here before I even go out.

Looking good!

Might have been more successful with some good mud terrains.

@EN2DIRT No doubt that an OBX with "street tires" wasn't the best choice for that kind of mud pit. Would he have made it if he had something more aggressive, maybe. but not even the guys with the snorkels in our group were willing to take it on, so that tells me something...

@BroncoJoerg Fun hardly ever makes the “right” choice.
EN2DIRT
Yea, I don't think I would have tried it. Kudos to him for giving it a shot, especially with street tires.

@EN2DIRT Yeah, except he was by himself, and had no recovery gear. He’s lucky we came along when we did.
