Using Hardware Cloth as Molle panels for rear quarter area (hard top)?

Hey all, I'm checking out the idea of using what is basically square chicken wire (I guess it's called hardware cloth) instead of dropping hundreds of dollars on real molle panels for the rear quarter areas. This is what I'm trying to replicate:

Except my idea will cost $7 instead of $130+. I'll just cut it to the exact shape/size that I need and I should still be able to mount whatever I want to it.
Has anyone done a jerry-rigged molle panel like this before? If so, any tips?

I did something similar on my F-250 I had. Unfortunately I never took pics of it. I used some Nylon Cargo netting. I just flamed all of the ends that I cut to kill the possible unraveling and used my soldering iron to make the holes for mounting fasteners with flat washer. It will work, just need to make mounting/stretching it as tight as possible so it doesn’t sag and sway/rattle too much once you start attaching items to it. Something like this is what I used. Usually available in a few colors and sizes so no need to buy 100sq ft for 20sq ft job.

Look at Amazon or Built Rite, they have some generic panels you cou possible cut and shape for you project.
