Probably got some gas in the evap canister due to overfilling the tank. Canister is over saturated so vapors may be coming out from the vent valve, which is normally open to atmosphere.

So yes, this happened to me once out on the trail. I left it idling while spotting some others, then came back to a very strong gas smell in the cabin. Rolled the winders down, finished the trail, aired up, and as I was leaving the park, by then the smell was very weak. I was parked with the motor running at an incline, maybe 7-8deg?

It was alarming! But ultimately I think some gas burped somewhere and the cabin filter got the smell and held it for awhile. My AC was on. So you might replace the cabin air filter.

On another note, what is "topping it off"? 🤔 I have heard this for years and seen signs warning against doing it at pumps, but I don't know what it means? is it like a ritual dousing of the engine in free hydrocarbons before a long trek into the wilders? Inquiring minds and all.

If that's not sarcasm: it's squeezing more gas in after the first pump auto shut off.

Tom
No sarcasm. I had a friend back in high school who would take the pump out and try to gas up to the end, where you could see gas. I figured that was what they were talking about. I've always gone 2-3 more shut-offs since forever, so interesting that's considered a problem. I guess I don't need that extra 1/5gal...

Expanded gas (and fuel) now goes into the charcoal overflow canister which eventually hardens the charcoal into lumps and then the overflow is vented to the atmosphere, hence the smell.

Ahh, thanks! I wasn't aware that was a thing.

Brian; Don't take it too hard...I did similar thing with my Harley. Topped off on a hot/humid NE day and the next AM garage was a fuel pit. Needless to say it will self-fix.

How's Chandler (BTW) - my big bro lives there...migrated fm MN for your hot winters. :D

Chandler is….HOT! I’ve lived here most of my life. It’s becoming a concrete jungle. But yeah, the winters are amazingly nice.
