What makes you think you would have to replace the glass? It looks like that piece is just sandwiched between the hinge and the glass, with a bolt going through all three and holding them together.

If you do it yourself you can use very high quality fluid and it will only cost you $75 or so, and yes for me it became noticeably smoother to shift especially 1 to 2 which was always my clunkiest gear as well.
