I had the 2.3 liter Turbo in my "88 Merkur Xr4ti. Only issue I had I blew a head gasket but that was not the engines fault. I knew the waste gate was not working properly. That motor was fun to drive ahead of the 5 speed manual.
I went this route for now to let the area breath and still be able monitor the welds.. I put the original boots back on. Hope for a future leak and new shocks.
Was the accident your fault or second party fault? If second party I would fight it more so that you would not be out the difference to replace your vehicle with like.
The OP stated that he replaced the leaking wheels on his own dime and I do not think ford dealer is going to make it right by giving him the cost for the replacement wheels that were causing the issues. When tires are losing air there is a problem and dealer sounds like they did not look at all...
Just inspected my rear shocks this morning. The reservoir attachment’s have no corrosion but the reservoir bottoms look like this. I wonder what my chances of new shocks are since the attachment welds show no corrosion.

I read the tech bulletin, My takeaway is that they are more concerned about the reservoir falling off the vehicle onto the road than they are about the original rust/leak/fail separation issue. They can still rust/ leak/falloff as long as the debris is contained in the rubber bag.
