Five-month update.
Electrically, it's been working fine.
Visually, the vinyl kept trying to pull away from the glass, resulting in a visible pattern on the outside in the shape of the bracket. Of course, I somehow failed to get any pictures of this.
My thought was to switch to a two-layer...
Oh wow, I thought they completely removed Driver Alert. I'm making a video about adding lane assist to my Flex and mention how useless Driver Alert is. I wanted to overlay a clip from ATHF with Master Shake responding don't tell me how to drive, jackass but the background is too noisy
It's...
A second battery under the hood is going to be difficult.
I've had issues with mine going into deep sleep because it doesn't get driven on the highway much.
Mounted a 10amp charger under the hood and popped an RV outlet in the bumper so I could plug it in at night.
Keep a lithium jumpstarter...
The pins are numbered inside the body, though it's incredibly tiny.
When the sensor is attached to the glass, connector facing towards the roof, the pins are arranged, left to right: Ground, LIN, Power. The connector diagram is pretty vague, so hopefully this is clearer:
Thanks, I kept forgetting to finish figuring out the templates. Luckily I found a plugin for Fusion 360 to export the sketches as SVG because Inkscape, Krita, Cricut, and all the rest of the Illustrator-style programs suck.
Templates in SVG format are attached as a ZIP below, as well as...
Tried to figure out Cricut Design Space. It's terrible. It was easier to convert my 3d printer into a vinyl cutter instead.
I'm pretty happy with how it came out this time with the smaller circle. Looking at other vehicles, it turns out the sensor is slightly off-center in a lot of cars, I just...
Yes, you can disable it entirely on the touchscreen (reverting back to factory behavior) or put the control to Off to temporarily disable it for carwashes.
(Replace "message center" with "touchscreen"; Flex changes the setting through the instrument cluster)
Yeah it's not to everyone's taste. I can understand people not liking the idea of an automated control they don't have direct influence over.
For me, it was well worth the ~$60 in parts to add the functionality, but I also had extra resources available like the printer and crimper.
We get a lot...
Supposedly for smaller parts like this, you can get away with not using an enclosure. The bed should keep it hot enough. MAYBE PETG would be ok, if you keep tension low enough.
The big struggle here is that the factory retainer really presses the sensor hard against the glass. That much tension...
Photos along the process. Tried taking a video and failed. You didn't want to hear me yell over the torpedo heater anyway. Edit: Newer photos with minor corrections here
Trimming vinyl
Vinyl attached to windshield
Initial look. The dot matrix with the fritting is unavoidable, the...
Finally bit the bullet and went for the full install.
Immediate lesson learned: The sensor window should've been 31mm, not 35. I'll wait until it's warmer to redo the vinyl. Doesn't seem to affect performance, just results in a silver ring around the sensor when viewed from outside. I also...
Ah gotcha. Just recall something from the last rainsense thread saying "is it really that necessary? Anybody who finds it too difficult to operate the wiper stalk has no business operating a multi-ton machine"
Made some mistakes in my design that didn't affect the end product at all but just...
It's a convenience feature.
Like power windows, push-to-start, power locks, automatic headlamps, e-lockers, speed-sensitive volume, or the way your turn signal cancels after you've completed a turn.
Instead of having to temporarily speed up your wipers when passing a semi or manually doing a...
Good news, I think we'll be ok. The rain sensor should be high enough to not obstruct the mirror
I'll design a printable version of the cover, maybe a little smaller if this is sticking below the factory fritting. Some rain sensors had some extra bit that stuck out opposite the connector...
When my wife gets home, I'll check if the rain sensor sticks down too low in that position. Your dashcam may have sat lower or closer to the sensor, blocking more available light. It's a very basic light sensor so it should be pretty tolerant.
(Of course, the rain sensor is really just a light...
Ah yeah, I forgot the mirror light sensor is back there. Good catch!
Weird, it shouldn't have affected the instrument cluster / SYNC; those are handled by the dashboard's sunload sensor.
Hoping I didn't botch it with ordering parts. I was in a bit of a rush and ordered a LU5Z-17D547-A instead of -B.
Looking closer, it appears the only difference is -A has the retainer perpendicular, -B has it angled. It seems they use the same sensor and retainer for both applications, the -A...
Edit: Full installation post
My Flex needs a windshield replacement. Considering they're going to swap over the rain sensor to the new glass anyway, figured this was a good opportunity to test it on the Bronco. A rough test with dangling wires and the sensor crudely stuck onto the windshield...
I noticed my music was making a glitchy noise the past weekend.
I played your video clip to my wife and she said "yeah mine's been doing that when i put it in reverse".
Hopefully the next update resolves it
Automating double-pressing R
Should be pretty easy to automate pressing R, I'm sure it's very close to the OKAY message.
I'm not sure what makes disabling ASS so difficult, but I also haven't looked at what network the radio panel is on. You'd think it'd be as simple as broadcasting whatever...
