I was taught that articulation (room for the tire to move up and down) was more important than tire size (ie larger tire) any thoughts?

Who taught you that? Slap them upside the head...

Anyway, the answer is it depends. Sometimes clearance is king, sometimes articulation is more important in a given situation, but it’s relative. Very few similar trucks with 31s are going to go through obstacles easier than a truck with 35s...That said, with lockers in both ends and reasonable flex...take the clearance and traction.

That my friend is a loaded question the answer.

Larger tires roll over larger imperfections easier but weigh more.

Flexy suspension can be achieved through both up and down travel and is limited by swaybars.

The mix of as much as you need of both tire and travel while maintaining street ability is the hard part.

There is some truth to it. It takes a bit of both for clearance over obstacles.
It has been stated many times the Badlands with 33"s has more articulation than the Badlands with 35"s. But the one with 35"s has more ground clearance due to the additional tire size. As @Gamecock said, it's relative.
