I built a full audio system with disconnects if I wanted to remove the sub box. System is all audio control with a 2 8” Memphis audio subs that are in a down firing ported box tuned to 40hz. System was very load with top on, ever with the top off the subs were decent. This is about as plug and play as you can get, just connect the splitter in the radio, install power and ground and tune it. This was for a non amplified 6” screen and wire length is for a 2 door. Will fit 4 door but may require wire extensions. Please feel free to ask questions

Looks like a pretty well done project!

I have a few questions:
  • It looks like you're removing everything if you take out the sub box or is that just laid on top for the picture?
  • Did you use common Molex connectors and where?
  • How do you safely disconnect the power and ground for the sub box amplifier or do you just disconnect the speaker wires somehow?

I used molex connectors at the box , which are offset male/female so that I could run speakers off head unit if I removed the box. I originally had made an aluminum tray that covered everything so I could carry a few items but never used it.
The power connection is in high amp quick disconnect typically used to charge electric forklifts. The power wire I used was over kill, high grade welding cable, not that cheap Amazon aluminum wire. You could connect a portable welding to the connection as well.

The concept of a removable subwoofer box has been on my mind since the beginning, but I stuck to simpler fixes and upgrades. I didn't know(or bother to research) that high amp quick disconnects existed that I could integrate into the project. Most electronic components--outside marine gear--aren't made for topless and muddy.

It looks like you're detaching the entire system, minus factory speakers, when you remove the box. I just want to remove the subwoofer box. If I go with a separate amp for subs, that'll be on the box. I'll have to make some waterproof or splash proof box or cover to house the disconnects.

Thanks for sharing this and giving me ideas!
