So what happens if you trigger the rear washer like that? Is it smart enought to know you are not connected and disable the pump or are you going to shoot fluid all over your cargo area?

It's a quick disconnect fitting. If it's not connected to the correct paired fitted it's sealed. The peg where it sits when not in use won't unseal it.
