That's what I'm realizing, ie there is no separate switch to turn it on/off.

Has to be on with the overhead dome light or overriden to stay off.

Thanks everyone.

I am going to assume you have the interior lights off when doors are opened via the button on the overhead panel.

There is no switch for the rear cargo light it is simply on/off with doors unless overridden by the “on” button in the overhead console or the “off when doors open” button.

To turn this on you have to turn all lights on

It seems you have to have a side door open. The rear door apparently does not have a switch and can go down the road with it open. Key FOB lock unlock also actuates the light.

The rear cargo area lighting is kind of a rat salad. I'm looking for overhead solutions for my 2 door, bright enough to be useful for camping or repair work. I'm looking at magnetic or stick on units.
