Montana Mountain Trip report -
I arrived a little early at the Bashas in Gold Canyon and found that two other Broncos were already there. By the 8:30 meet time we had a total of 7 Broncos. We had a quick introduction and then headed to the trailhead 22 miles east. The trailhead is directly across from the Boyce Thompson Arboretum. we quickly aired down and were on the trail just after 9 AM.
I took the lead and we headed out. We found the route pretty easy going at the start being it's mostly a graded road. That said, the ones in the back of the group had to deal with a little bit of dust.
8.5 miles into the trail we turned off onto a side road that led us to the remains of several stone built homes. We stopped and walked around a little and got some pics.
Back out to the main road we started up the switchbacks. there was about 4 miles of switchbacks with some being quite tight and washed out. There wasn't anything to technical, it just took a little spotting as we went. At the top of the switchbacks we took a quick break to stretch.
At the 15 mile mark we stopped for a quick bit to eat, relax and socialize. The rain started to come in so we cut lunch short and got loaded back up and we proceeded onward.
Shortly after our lunch we topped out on the trail and began our descent back down the mountain.
Passing several groups of vehicles on the way we had several areas where it was rocky and you had to be careful choosing your line. On one particular tight right turn it's quite rough and as you make the turn your right front tire dips in a hole and your left rear tire rises into the air. For those new to this kind of wheeling it's a pucker factor for sure.
Everyone made it thru albeit a few skid plates touched but that was it. By this time the rain had pretty much cleared out and the roads being dust free began to flatten and straighten out a little giving us a few short bursts of "Baja Mode" which is lots of fun.
Just over 5 hours into the trip we arrived at the ending trailhead where we aired up our tires, said our goodbyes and departed for home.
In attendance we had a
Cactus grey driven by Buz and codriver Mika
Hot pepper red 2 door driven by Steve
Eruption green driven by Bud Fleckenstein
Hot pepper red 4 door driven by Jed McKeon
Cyber orange driven by Mark & Jennie Treadway
Cyber orange driven by Graham Taylor
And my Area 51 SeeMore driven by ME
There were others in the back seats but I didn't get all their names.
