Weird. I didn't see anything in any of the other threads that seemed ban-worthy at all.
Maybe he got a PM warning from a mod, and decided to offer some advice.... 😂

I haven't read an "oil" thread, because I don't need too, I've been changing my own oil since I was a teenager...

I only use Motorcraft filters & oil in all 4 of my Fords. I've never bought a Car Quest filter... Back in the day, before I converting to all Ford, I bought the manufacturers brand. But I'm going to agree with most on here, that it looks like poor QC on the filter assembly line. To me, it looks like it may be the leftover piece from machining the threads in the filter?

Man, I was so stoked to perform my first oil change today at 1278 miles! 2026 Heritage 2.3 7MT. My FIRST EVER brand new car.

I read the oil thread and the other one about the change in filters for 2025+ MY MPC engines. I settled on Valvoline 5w30 Advanced protection full synthetic and carquest premium extended protection filter based on the excellent feedback.

As I am pulling off the factory filter, I see a glint of metal. My heart sinks. And then I pull a strand of metal probably as long or longer than my phone out of the oil feed for the filter. WTF. I have been working on cars since I was 12 (I am 38) and never, ever seen anything like this in my life.

I stopped mid oil change and called Ford customer relations. Nice girl, could offer zero advice or help other than call your dealership and i'll notate your file. Again, WTF!? Pics for reference

I looked in the oil feed with my borescope and could see no evidence of anything further up the passage. There is nothing obviously wrong as you can see above. But how will I ever be sure that this motor isn't going to grenade while I have my wife and kids inside?

I am truly heartbroken. Not sure whether to initiate a buyback or have the dealer take it for months and replace the motor. I'm sure if they do that it will never be right again. I JUST FINISHED kilmatting the trunk floor, just got my procal in and was going to do the tune tonight. NOT ANYMORE! F#$%%@
Over react much??

Is everything in your life met with this much drama?

You also seem to have no idea how a "buy back" works. For context, I did one on my 2004 6.0 F350.

Neither Ford, or your dealer are required to do anything because you found some stuff in your filter. It’s abnormal for sure but until you experience a real failure, this just seems hysterical. Document the findings and get on with your life.

A piece of metal like that (which is aluminum) is 100% from machining of the oil filter adapter that didn't wash out when it went through the final cleaning before being shipped to assembly. It was likely 'wedged' in there where it couldn't be seen with a quick eyeball inspection, so it passed. It is on the feed to the filter side, so it wouldn't have traveled through the motor at all.

It almost certainly did NOT come from the block.

It's frustrating, that I 100% understand. However, having lived in the manufacturing world my entire life, one has to remember that they live off of 95-98%. Meaning 95-98% of their product has to meet spec, and they'll call it good. Some Tier 1 suppliers shoot for 99%. But because of mass-production, there will ALWAYS be some fallout, and your OFA happened to fall in that 1-5% (I don't know what the manufacturer of that component uses) that the manufacturer is allowed. It sucks that it happened to be yours.

That said, because it COULDN'T go anywhere but into the filter, and the filter should be catching anything that would have broken off of it, I'd say you're safe. Change your oil again in a thousand miles or so to be sure, but I doubt you're going to have any issues whatsoever. At least, not stemming from this unfortunate circumstance.
exactly my thoughts, a grooving tool chip from a lathe opeation.

I'm sure you havent read all the pages since this thread has somewhat spiraled, but I did just that. Documented with Ford and moved on. End thread.

And this is one of the reasons why I get all work done at the dealer--if anything comes up, they are able to deal with it. I keep in that I am operating a complex and complicated computer system on 4 wheels and the "DIY" option has passed on for good.

I wouldn’t panic, as these never went through your engines moving parts. Sure sucks, but I’d flush the engine oil, put a new filter and check the oil again after 1000 miles. I’m pretty sure you’ll be fine. I wonder what did you expect the lady from the service center to do? lol.

no, all free. The strip came out of the feed hole. Not tangled in the filter media
When you say "feed hole"... Outside holes or one in middle?
