Honestly, this is something that I just never understood about car manufacturing. Why would an auto manufacturer ever forego using high-strength steel for the most likely points of impact on a vehicle and instead use plastic? I feel like HD steel bumpers should be standard equipment on all vehicles. I know, I know. Vehicles will be more expensive. But, I thought this new fancy steel Ford is using is cheaper to make? That should mean cheaper vehicles, not the opposite.
My guess, is that because two vehicles colliding with each other is different than trail rash from deflecting rocks and trees. Models that assume mostly if not all road use, only require safety bumpers. People that want more on the lesser models, will buy or make their own steel bumpers for off-road.
