I have the RB20. Today I avoided an obstacle becauseI didn’t want to scrap the side step.

If I did hit the side step enough to bend it, would it damage just the steps or since it mounts to the body would it mess the body up too?

I smashed mine into rock and the bottom are scratched up from sliding across said wrong and so far it's been fine. Buts more of a gouge than scratch

They are designed to take a beating, but are not entirely rated to support the full weight of the vehicle. I'd say you'll probably screw up the steps pretty good before doing damage to the body, but it is possible for body damage to occur.
