Bronco6G and most other forums won't let you post a pin from Google Earth, but you can copy and paste latitude and longitude. This will let you transfer locations to and from Google Maps and Google Earth, and maybe other programs.

I'd love to know other methods of sharing locations.

Nice aerial view, but where is it? And what app did you use? From what I know, I couldn't find you.

Also you did that on a phone. I'm on a computer. I'm trying to think of ways to share locations that are platform independent.

You can create a link for any location via google maps. That will work across pc and phone

I did that and it works very well, except the link won't work (as far as I know) in Google Earth. But you can copy/paste latitude and longitude from Google Maps to Google Earth. It's a bit fussy to go the other way.

Seems Google doesn't want the two apps to share locations, or they never thought about it.

I'm being fussy because Google Maps doesn't seem to give elevation information, but Google Earth does. I use Google Earth to calculate the slopes of various roads and trails.

In google maps if you toggle on the terrain layer view, you can at least see the elevation lines on the map. Not sure if that is helpful or not for your use case.

There's also this tool, which gives more exact elevation information based on google maps - https://www.randymajors.org/elevation-on-google-maps

That would be perfect if the person is familiar with the area. I'd probably do the same thing.

I was thinking more for those who like to share information on here.

One more reason for me to pull the trigger and get Onyx.

I was thinking more of apps that everyone is likely to have. They're either free or come bundled with a phone or computer.

Neither give as good of elevation information as Google Earth. But then, I don't either were designed to accomplish what I'm looking for.

About a year go I played with a demo (free) version of Gaia. I know I'll eventually have to break down and get a mapping app to plan trips.

Yesterday I was looking at a road I'm thinking about taking. Google Earth shows the road exists, but you don't get much idea of the condition of the road. The aerial photography isn't that good in rural areas.

I've mainly used Google Earth to measure roads I was on years ago, before we had all this technology at our fingertips.

Then I got to thinking how would I share my past adventures with others who don't have Google Earth? That lead to this thread.
