This was my first differential maintenance of any sort. Hope it helps.

I bought a new gasket but I have read you can reuse them.interesting...watched part of it...did you reuse the gasket or buy new? and didn't use the RTV provided to set it in place? I've had mine sitting in the garage since they sent it to me![]()
Cast iron doesn’t bend and cause leaks when hit by rocksWhat's your logic on upgrading your rear diff cover? Just curious.
The gasket is reusable.. it’s not a dainty paper one. Just clean up the mating surfaces and torque all the bolts down to spec and there’s no probleminteresting...watched part of it...did you reuse the gasket or buy new? and didn't use the RTV provided to set it in place? Thicker and heavier metal, more protection. That’s it’s purpose. What's your logic on upgrading your rear diff cover? Just curious.
Ya, I understand what the purpose of diff protection is, I was just curious why you chose to upgrade on your rig. Did something prompt you to? I don't know how you run your rig, how many rocks you see with those AT tires. Was it a "well that's fairly cheap and I want to change my diff fluid and make a video anyway" type of thing or did you have an issue? I wheel my Bronco super hard, broke a CV shaft this weekend hard, but I haven't upgraded my diff cover. I mean If you had an problem with yours, I may think harder about upgrading mine, but so far I've either been lucky or the lip is fairly protected (I don't worry so much about backing into anything with my diff).Cast iron doesn’t bend and cause leaks when hit by rocks
I had not ever planned on upgrading my diff cover. Then Metal Cloak was doing a giveaway on this forum, so I entered and got one surprisingly. The Metal cloak diff cover is a little more $ than the gear oil.Ya, I understand what the purpose of diff protection is, I was just curious why you chose to upgrade on your rig. Same, I was one of the winners, but it still sits in my garage, I wasn't ready to approach this without a little more information. It's still pretty vague on the internet on this.I had not ever planned on upgrading my diff cover. Then Metal Cloak was doing a giveaway on this forum, so I entered and got one surprisingly. I actually hit quite a few rocks this weekend on a washed-out dirt road. I do not think any hit the diff cover. I did want to make a video as well.
You do not need to be backing up to damage a diff cover. I saw someone slide their stock cover down a rock that caught it and pealed it up just enough for a leak to start.
