where did you get your info?

Absolutely it has a consistent additive package. Every time. Because the do something that NO OTHER vendor does: they have a tank of their own Kirkland additive package on site, and it gets mixed in with every delivery.

This way, they can take from whatever vendors but ensure that what goes into the member's tank is top quality and Top Tier.

And it keeps costs down. Way down.

https://web.archive.org/web/20190122105140/http://www.neiwpcc.org/tanks2013old/presentations/tuesday/Fuel Additives and DEF/Fuel Additives_Hurlocker_2013_Tuesday.pdf

It works just like the dosing at the terminal, when loading the truck, except smaller in scale. The truck delivers, and the dosing happens at that time.

For the record, it's Lubrizol 9888.

This process allows them to take ANY gas--including the tankers with the lowest legal dose of whatever lowest cost additive package (grocery store gas), but deliver to its customers a Top Tier gas. And at a cost lower than grocery store gas.

Again, where did you get YOUR info on how Costco runs their fueling program?

There's a guy here on the net somewhere, thinks he knows everything about the gasoline business because he used to run a group of stations many years ago. When I said that Costco delivers its own additive package at each delivery, he flat-out denied that that could possibly be--simply because "nobody does that" and he had never heard of it. He argued it to the death. Then he STFU after I pointed him to the link above.

On top of all that, Costco sells a metric shit ton of gas every day. Each station gets many deliveries each day. As a result, their gas is ultra fresh.
I stand largely corrected. I do remember reading about Costco gas in multiple places online and it wasn't prior to the date when they implemented their own additive blending.

Now that said, the base fuel also matters a lot and equally as much as the additive package. Nothing in your link above speaks to the base fuel itself, rather ONLY the consistency of the additive. Not even really it's quality.

A poor base fuel can cause knocking, reduced power, poor combustion, and increased deposits. The base fuel is critical in high-performance or direct-injection engines (such as the B.Raptor).

So that makes your paragraph beginning with, "This process allows..." false.

As I understand it, in any given local location (at least the vast majority of locations), all local brands and stations are using the same base fuel from the same (regional) refinery.

In other words unless I am wrong, I don't think you can shop (without traveling) base fuel, only the additive package(s)...

So that means you do not believe there are any significant differences is base fuel formulations, in the US, for either performance nor longevity?

I use 90% Shell gas. Only if I can’t find it do I use other gas.
I use 100% Shell 89 so far. Not because I know stuff but because people on this forum who sound like they know stuff say they use Shell.

You're safe using any of these brands. I'll run 87 all the time and have had zero issues.
The retailers will change on the list. The manufacturers run tests on the fuels to make sure they comply with the top tier criteria.

The EPA regulates gasoline blending according to elevation, temperature and location. The individual retail chains then add their own additive packages as long as they don't violate EPA regulations.

So you're correct. All brands of gas are the same when they leave the refinery. The specific detergents, etc are usually added at the tank farm when the trucks pick up the gas for delivery to the stations. At least that's how it works in Phoenix.

Except for Costco.
Talked to the guy at my local Costco. They''re pretty clever. They have a separate tank for the detergent package. It's added as gas is pumped.. This allows them to take deliveries from any truck. Just one more way to get a lower price.

I got to wondering how the detergent package was metered to insure the right blend, so I asked. It also means 91 octane and 87 octane get the same detergent package. With other brands that's not always true.

Correct. Their additive is pumped into the main tanks during delivery from the gasoline tanker.
