Trip planning: what do you carry on the roof?

Planning a summer 2k mile road trip with the fam. I don’t want to have anything in the cab area so debating on getting a half roof rack. I’m taking a small assortment of emergency tools. Any off-reading will be limited to light trails.

On long trips:

• What do you carry on the roof rack?
• How do you keep it secure?
• Have you ever had anyone mess with your stuff on the rack?

Not sure if you are camping at all, but I bought a big waterproof cargo bag on Amazon (Keeper is the brand). We throw all the blankets, pillows, sleeping pads, and tents in it and then strap it to a roof platform. Keeps all the bulky stuff out of the interior yet all the items are also lightweight which is always nice when it comes to roof cargo.
