I feel like an idiot. How do you remove the taillight trim?

They are push pins with Phillips screws in them. Turning the Phillips screws does nothing, all 8 just spin and don't come out.

What's the secret..

Hold the outer ring, use a small pocket screwdriver and use as little pressure as possible. Some come out fine other don't. Use same pocket screwdriver (flat blade) and insert under the head of the inner wedge and pry it out. Throw in trash and get some new ones at the auto store or amazon.

Yup you nailed it. These are shit, haha.

You almost have to find the perfect Phillips fit to try and turn and "pull" it out at the same time. If you apply any pressure at all you're just holding it in.

I got 7/8. Ripped one out.

I'm convinced they were designed for ease of install at the factory and the Phillips head was put in there as a cruel joke for anyone trying to remove.

There's no chance the Phillips head was touched at the factory, just push it in there.

I prefer the regular push pins you pry the center out.

Oh well, job's done. 👍
