Finally getting my Bronco sorted. 6112’s went on today And what a HUGE diff over the stock OBX Hitachi coilovers. Brake dive is pretty much gone instead, firmer/more solid ride (not harsh by any means), but much more confidence inspiring. Only driven 40mi. so far but will report back on new handling characteristics as I amass more miles.
Details:
1. The Bilstein printed lift heights that came with coilovers were outdated and not complete. Called Shock Surplus and they helped me locate updated lift heights that included “non-SAS / non-Badlands lift heights“.
2. Front lift height, (per 5/31/23 revised Bilstein specs), were pretty much dead on. I was looking for 2” lift in front and clip location gave me approx. (2 & 3/8”) lift (before settling). Bilstein specs stated clip location #2 at 2.2” lift. So very close and after settling s/b right on.
3. Rear lift height, to eliminate some of the oem rake we used clip position#1 for a stated lift of 1.8” and we came out around 1.6”
- Pleased and will post pics once the “weenie” OBX wheels are replaced next week.
- Keep in mind that the clip lift heights are different for the front vs rear coilovers, so be sure you have the correct instructions for correct coilover.
- Since Bilstein uses the clip grooves for lift heights you will need to choose a clip location closest to your desired lift…they will settle 1/8 to 1/4”, (per my installer), and if you’re planning on adding mods, steel bumpers, skids, etc., be sure and take that into account…
UPDATE
OK, so I <finally> have pics of new lift with SASWildtrack wheels and 35s. Huge difference in stance/look & handling. Handles much more solid now w/o all the “wallow & brake dive“ of stock Hitachis/18” tires. rides firmer (but not at all unpleasant/stiff). Much more confidence inspiring. A bit louder and I feel the additional heft of the 35s not so much in acceleration, but requires a tad more brake pedal to stop.
Again, nothing major, just sharing my initial impressions. I“d estimate the 6112s were 60% of the improvement in handling with 35’s accounting for the rest. 6112s are not inexpensive, but well worth it, IMO.
Being a non-SAS OBX, I opted for the full coilover units- as I felt the non-SAS Hitachi coils were pretty soft. Sourced them through Shock Surplus with Labor Day discount for a good deal. Pics:
