I had an oil change on my 2024 Ford Bronco yesterday and while the oil indicator in my Ford Pass is showing at 100%, it’s estimating 600 miles. My last oil change was less than a year ago, less than 800 miles, before it indicated 28% oil life. I drive it on the weekends allowing it to warm up for about 2 minutes before easing it out and warming it up as I drive. It is supposed to be an estimate based on driving habits, but I am trying to take care of my engine so I am not sure if I should be concerned. Any feedback would be appreciated. The engine has about 2100 miles on it.

The oil life indicator takes time into account. My oil life indicator went to 0% with only about 2000 miles on it, in a little less than a year.

Thanks for responding. I appreciate the insight and will continue to monitor it. Have a great one!

Wait, what? You changed oil yesterday, and it's showing 100% but only 600 miles until next change?? Something is F'd up.... See if the app updates in a couple days....

If you are changing early (i would say 5,000 or under), then the oil change interval on the computer is more or less redundant anyway.

That is odd it’s showing what you see though - if thats on the dash and not just Ford Pass you may want to try another oil life reset since it was fairly recent just to see what it does.

I just find an Autozone 250 miles from home and only buy a quart of oil at a time. When I have 6, I change my oil. :ROFLMAO:

I appreciate all the insight everyone. I went ahead and reset the oil life indicator. I will wait a few days to see if the mileage changes. Thanks again!

The mileage estimation to next oil change in the app is based on how many miles per day you’ve been driving lately, on average. If you only drove 800 miles in the last year or so, it thinks you will need another oil change in a year, and that you will only have driven about 600 miles in that time.

For instance, I just changed my Bronco’s oil 2 weeks ago but since I’ve only been driving about 300 miles per month lately, it currently shows 3900 since it thinks I’ll only have added that much mileage when I hit 1 year.

The % oil life remaining in the app and on the oil life monitor on the dash is independent of the mileage estimation in the app (X,XXX mi Est.) and is just based on the following formula:

Oil life % remaining = lesser of:

100 - (.274 * number of days since last reset)

-or-

(10,000 - miles since last reset) / 100

It doesn’t take it to account anything like cold starts, high temps, hard acceleration, etc etc as some people believe. It’s certainly not chemically sampling the oil and basing its recommendation on some kind of chemical analysis.

I’m not saying that some other vehicles don’t not use a more advanced algorithm, but the one in the Bronco doesn’t.

This is partially correct. It does base percentage off of a known formula.
But there is a software algorithm in the PCM that factors in and adjusts the percentage off multiple real time and cumulative things like coolant and oil temperatures, idling time, load and driving style/overall operating conditions like aggressive acceleration, short trips, cold starts, etc.
That is exactly what Ford’s “Intelligent Oil Life Monitor” is, which has been around for a long time now.

I’ll agree that it’s definitely not chemically sampling the oil for analysis though lol

It must take something extreme in terms of temps or idle time to shorten the life at all off that basic formula. I’m a little bit skeptical but I know not to question you. For instance I had one Bronco that had run 250 hours when I changed the oil (from the trip meter) and another that had run 140. So the 250 hour idled a bunch. Both were at 5000 miles and both still said exactly 50%.

I think that’s certainly a possibility with all the other variables in 5000 miles.

Either way, that’s just the information from Ford themselves. I know they’ve have multiple patents for algorithm based oil deterioration and have been working on it for a long time. But I’m sure whatever they’re currently using is proprietary so I don’t really have any idea exactly how it works.

I used to think that too but my Bronco has thoroughly departed from 10k/100% and I drive it a whole lot more than the OP. It gives me about 7200 from fresh now - wonder what I'm doing to drag it down.
I personally only go about 5k max between changes, but that's more my paranoia than anything.

Well, that would certainly explain it.... but what a stupid, mostly irrelevant data point. I would have loved to have sat in on that meeting.... 😅 Now I know why I never bother to look at it on the app.... 🥴

I've never used the oil indicator for any car I've ever had...I just change the oil and rotate the tires every 5000. It's easier in my opinion...just a thought

All of this info has been incredibly helpful. It honestly scared me when the indicator listed such a short range on oil life. I drive between 800 to 1000 miles a year so I expected it to last a lot longer, but understanding the algorithm goes a long way. I appreciate all the responses. Happy trails everyone.
