Seriously, though, I would not purchase a fire extinguisher with the expectation of being able to put out a fire under the hood. I'm not sticking my hand under the hood to release the latch when a raging inferno is happening.
I had an engine fire in a Land Rover and it burned to the ground. I had an extinguisher. I was able to pop the hood. Exhausted the extinguisher in about 90 seconds. It did nothing.
I bought one of these, the 10 lb version after reading about BroncoSierra's experience. I knew I didn't want a dry chemical extinguisher. Expensive but worth it in my opinion. They told me to spray into the grill until white smoke comes out then pop the hood. They come with a life time warranty.

Man, what an absolute nightmare. First and foremost, so glad to hear you, your wife, and the pup made it out safely.

It's one of those scenarios nobody wants to deal with, but having a real-world reference on how Ford handles it vs. standard insurance is a massive help to the community. Pausing the insurance claim sounds like a serious gamble, but it's awesome that Ford stepped up, got you a loaner, and made you whole.

Interesting notes on the 2026 quality control, especially the tailgate alignment. I’m running a Cactus Gray 6th Gen up here in Upstate NY. Mine actually started life as a completely stock Base model, and I've been building it out for overland travel ever since :like:

Good luck with that. It took a full fire truck, spraying foam, about 3 full minutes to put my Rover’s fire out.

Much depends on how much a fire has progressed before attempts to extinguish it.

As a firefighter, don't open the hood if you don't have an extinguisher. It will just expand the fire. If you do have a decent extinguisher just pop the hood and spray under the hood. In newer vehicles just let it burn and get upwind away from the fire. The plastics and other things in a vehicle fire are EXTREMELY toxic. SOP's for our dept. are SCBA's on before attacking a vehicle fire. Glad everyone is safe. Enjoy that new Bronco Raptor.
