Personally, I like the look of these two:

The MXT275 puts all the controls into the microphone but is a little older. The MXT115P has noise canceling to filter out background noise and is a little newer. There is another model imminent that may be worth waiting for.

There are 50W versions, but I think 15W is enough for almost anyone.

I'll second this one. Radio is almost completely undetectable when the handset is disconnected, positioning is solid...the only difference is I hardwired mine without using the upfitter switch.

I have been very impressed with the Rugged Radios G1. I have it mounted to my @Mountains2Metal center console MOLLE I have put together a “kit” using Bullet Point Mounting Solutions hardware to create a speaker and magnetic mic holder. This has been great as I wear hearing aids and having that speaker there really helps me not miss communications and I opted for the stealth antenna that I mounted using mountains 2 Metal antenna mount on the SPV a pillar mounts.

I also have a midland 275 mounted in the console with external speaker centered above windshield…get a good antenna and it is all ya should need…also have some Radioddity gm30 handhelds for out of vehicle and loaners

@NotARubicon may have some opinions on this subject.

I use a Btech radio that's not part 95 approved because I like to live dangerously, and it irks all the radio dorks. (I also don't have my HAM license because I find all the HAM nerds insufferable.) I don't transmit on frequencies I've not obtained government permission for - I swear Mr. FCC agent and radio goon taddle-tells.

My antenna is a stubby on a magnetic mount on the roll bar. Yes, it's inside the hard top. No, it doesn't transmit to Mars. Yes, it works fantastically on the road and the few times I've actually cared about what somebody else says on some backcountry roads. Mounting it 10" higher and all the trouble associated with running cabling outside the vehicle isn't worth the effort to me. For vehicle-to vehicle comms, which my wife and I regularly do on trips in separate vehicles, we get all the fars we need.

Point of this is don't fret too much about equipment and an Instafacespace photogenic installation. A decent handheld is honestly more than most people actually need, but the convenience of a portable is worth the extra effort if you use it a lot.

I have the Midland MX 575. I have an Automatic transmission so I used the Mountains 2 Metal bracket that uses the studs that would have been used for the clutch petal. Really made the install easy. Watch out for the edges of the plate. They can be a little sharp and give you minor cuts.

I have the midland radio mounted to a builtright molle panel. I mounted some magnets to the back of the mic and behind the dash so I have a nice hidden mount for it that’s invisible with the mic isn’t attached. I’m using the stubby antenna that I mounted to a rugged radios mount (had to modify this a little bit to fit)

I like that antenna mount, way better than what I have mine mounted with. I have mine on a ditch light bracket

My trail rig is an 06 Jeep Wrangler LJ. I have a Radioddity DB40 and Midland - MXTA26 antenna mounted on my tire carrier. Great setup! Much easier to route the cable for the antenna since it's a soft top. So the cable is tucked under one of the zippers.

I also have a Radioddity GM30 Pro that was an impulse buy in one of the recent Amazon sales. I think it was $26 at the time. Supposedly a great radio for the price. I programmed a local repeater into it a few days ago, haven't actually talked on the radio yet.

I also have a Baofeng UV5G Mini that I carry in the Jeep as an 'out of vehicle' radio. I love this radio because it's so small. I'm usually using it while spotting people and just to monitor the radio when I'm not in the Jeep.

I do have my GMRS and ham tech licenses. I have a couple Baofeng UV5R's as well. I also have a Yaesu FT8800 ham radio that has the 'mars cap' mod (unlocks the radio). This is my old Jeep radio, not currently mounted.

I haven't gone offroad in the Bronco yet, have had it 4 weeks. Since it's not a trail rig (yet), I just plan to bring a handheld when I go. If I start wheeling it more often, I'll probably install a mobile at some point.
