So it has happened now three times where I have a temporary engine misfire. The first two times the car was in ECO mode and it happened (both times) as I pushed the car at highways speeds to pass, it ran rough, the check engine light flashed, I switched the car to normal, and it then seemed to self clear. CEL goes off and all goes back to normal. Those two times I got a message in My Ford app, and after the first had it checked by the dealer and they found nothing.

The last one the car was in Sport, and again merging into a highway uphill (full load) saw the CEL flashing and then it went away, no messages, nothing after.

I am running the car on regular, it has about 5k miles, second engine, does anyone else have this issue ? I feel taking it to the dealer is a waste of time and I get "found nothing"

Any ideas?

Sounds like it could be a spark plug gap issue. If you know what cylinder is is misfiring, check the gap on that plug.

Hello, Leon! Send us a private message with your VIN and the name and location of your local Ford dealer. I’d be happy to see what I can do to assist with this engine concern. Thanks!

Did you ever get this figured out mine is doing the exact same thing just changed plugs and no change. It is always cylinder 1 and 5 on mine. Does it almost instantly in sport mode but almost never in normal unless really hard acceleration. Very frustrating Thanks for any help

Try premium fuel....I wouldn't run regular fuel even in 20 year old lawnmower...

If the engine light came on, it should have thrown a code. Read the codes.

It sounds like an ignition coil perhaps

If you have changed the plugs, I would suspect the coil packs on cylinders 1 & 5. To check I would (and I have done this) move the coil packs around. Put coil pack 1 in cylinder 2 and 2's in cylinder 1. Then put coil pack 5 in cylinder 4 and 4's in cylinder 5. Drive it and if another misfire occurs see if the misfires move with the coil packs. If they move replace the coil packs. If not, then next I would check wiring. I am assuming you are using a quality fuel.

Seen this in my f250 with a 6.2. Coil packs and plugs fixed it. Had it twice. #7 cylinder then #2. Swapped coils and got a misfire on 2 and 3. That was where I moved to coil to. Dealer changed the pack and plugs on 2.

#7 happened a few months later. This time I use forscan to monitor the misfires and drove it to the dealer. I showed them the PID info. They changed the coil and plugs under the emissions warranty.

if you have forscan use the PID monitor function and set it up for all cylinders and have some else monitor it while drive. Reproduce issue and check the data.

My X5M blasts through them constantly. Same thing every time. Hard acceleration usually sets it off. CEL. Limp mode. Scan and get the code to be sure. Move the coil to double check. Replace coil. Rinse and repeat.

BMWs and Fords are notorious for eating ignition coils.
Interesting... I've had four BMW 6 & 8 cyl never an issue and multiple Fords 4cyl turbos to V8s and never had an issue with coils or plugs. I never try to "upgrade" outside of what's OE because more often than not it just causes problems.

ECUs do all kinds of compensatory things to compensate for poor fuel and I wouldn't be surprised if the high ratio ethanol blend craze wreaking havoc.

I am very good friends with 3 mechanics who own their own shops. 1 is a BMW specialty shop. They've all talked about the issues with ignition coils in all of the ford trucks (the 4.6, 5.4 and the 6.8) and with many of the BMW engines.

The BMW motors are awful with them. The N43, N53 and N54 motors all are known for it.
My X5M has the S63 motor and I burn a couple each year.

Interesting, I know many people with various BMWs and fleets of Ford trucks no one has issues that I've heard of.

Our clients trust Ford trucks 500+ miles from any civilization in camps for months on end, year round, with no worries or issues.

Could be the modern refineries and low sulphur fuels using highest grade octane additives banned in many countries.

Must be a regional fuel formulation issue to speculate.

In general N. American fuels are very poor quality VS euro fuel I'm surprised BMW still hasn't learned since the 1990s fiasco of burned out V8s from our high sulphur content.

I've had 6 V8 BMWs...no issues always running them hard on 93.
