I've had the Deepsleep inflatable memory foam mattress for my 4-door Badlands for a year now and recently made a review video (below) from my recent trip to the Sierras.

Here's what the product looks like rolled up. Note that you have to purchase both sides individually, and that what I have shown here is for both sides. Solo travelers can just purchase/use one side.

Setup takes just a few minutes. After unrolling the pads, they will start to inflate once you pop the valve open. This typically takes about 10 minutes, and I just let them fill up while I'm setting up camp.

It was really nice waking up to this! I always crack the windows about an inch to vent. I've never had an issue with condensation until this last trip, though it was below freezing and very humid.

My top 3 favorite things about the Deepsleep (in no order):
  • Perfectly contours to the back of the Bronco, maximizing your usable sleep space.
  • High r-value; keeps you very warm on those cold nights.
  • Very comfortable. We have even used it on the ground in our tent as well.
Top 3 downsides (these have more to do with the logistics of sleeping in the Bronco than the actual product itself):
  • Requires putting the seat very far up and tilting forward (at least if you're tall), so in addition to having to pull things out of the back, you also have limited room to store stuff up front.
  • Driver's side bump on tailgate takes away a few inches of foot space.
  • Have to use something (bags, etc) to fill the gap between the folded down rear seat and the back of the front seats in order to support the spot where your head goes. It hasn't really been an issue, but kind of annoying.
I am a big boy (6' 3'', 260+ lbs) and me, my wife, and our two dogs can fit reasonably comfortably in the back. We'd be much more comfortable without the dogs, obviously. When I go on solo trips, I'm very comfortable with just the one side set up.

Here's my video review... hope you enjoy. Let me know if you have any questions, and I'm happy to answer.

@Pale Horse Adventures Nice review. Glad you found a good solution. Maybe sometime soon can you please show us your full setup - especially when packed?

What’s the material like? Decently thick? Will it hold up your dogs claws?

Have had mine since they came out, and only got one side since it's just me and my 100 lb Pittie/Mastiff, and love it, and a great review!

It's definitely thick/durable material. Plus I always cover it with a flannel sheet and/or a blanket. Haven't had any issues with the dogs, or with any punctures in general. Deepsleep's website states its meant to hold up to use with dogs/pets.

The full DeepSleep solution is plush and comfy but bulky and takes away too much headroom in the sleeping area if you are 6 ft or over. It is also a hassle to store during the day when you don't need it.

I only purchased their leveling mats and then run a cheapish self inflatable sleeping mat from Amazon on top of it. Those are only 1.5-2 inches thick and it is easy to fold them over in two to free up the cargo area during the day, then unfold in the evening.

Are you doing this with more than one person in the back? IMO one of the big benefits of the Deepsleep is it contours to the sides and uses the space efficiently. This is helpful in my case being 6'3'' and having a wife and two dogs in there as well.

Both me and my wife have slept in the back like this on a few occasions. But most of the time it is just me. I have plastic bins with food, gear, fire wood, etc strapped behind the driver. I sleep on the passenger side. During the day I just throw the leveling mate in the folded down seat, fold the sleeping mat in half with the sleeping bag in the middle, a d use a bungee cord to keep it from shifting around during the day. This frees up the passenger ger side cargo area for other stuff I needed to unload overnight. My use mode is usually arrive in camp late (often in the dark) and leave early (usually before sunrise) so quick setup and tewrdowb are paramount. The full DeepSleep combo is extremely unwieldy for that purpose. Maybe at 6'3" you need the extra space next to the door, at 6' I don't. My sleeping pad is 25" at the shoulders and narrows down to 20" in the foot area, is no crinkly and quite comfortable. I have slept on it when outside temps are in the single digits and it's R factor is fine inside the Bronco

A few other hacks that you may appreciate at 6'3"

For seat gap filling I use two Dometic 3gal water containers side by side. They fit perfectly in the seat gap, I just leave them there permanently with the passenger seat slid forward when I travel alone. If I am with my wife I use cheap Amazon inflatable seat gap filler for me (she is 5'5" and does not need one)

At your height your feet almost certainly touch the gate at night, particularly if the vehicle is not fully level. When it is cold outside that is no fun. I have two coubter-measures. First I always park the vehicle so it is 2-3 degrees tilted towards the front. That keeps me from sliding towards the gate. More recently I removed the molle panel from my tailgate table and stuffed the area with 3/4" EVA foam. That way, even if my feet do touch they rest against foam, not metal.

I'm calling BS that at 6' 3" you are sleeping comfortably with your wife and 2 dogs, lol. Yes, you did say reasonably comfortable. We all have a different threshold for what is reasonable. I am a bit biased; at 6'5" I can't imagine trying to sleep in the back of my bronco, even just by myself. This is partly because I also have a sprinter van with an olympic queen 12-inch mattress that is like sleeping in my home bed. So I'm not really trying to solve for sleeping in my Bronco. Being this tall I do have to look at things a bit differently, and I put a high priority on sleeping comfort - even though my bed takes up a lot of space in the van.

Really good review of the product, I appreciate the details and the video. Cool solution by DeepSleep also, they've solved for the uneven platform w/ the leveling pads. Glad it works for you - keep on adventurin'!

At the end of the day…you’re still in the back of a Bronco! Haha. Limited room for sure.

We’re actually getting an offroad teardrop trailer this summer that I’m really excited about. Has a queen sized bed inside.

6'3" is completely doable comfortably with wife only... as long as the wife isn't also 6'3". Slide the passenger seat completely forward, tilt the seat back forward as far as it will go, stuff the gap, tilt the vehicle slightly forward. I am 6'1" and there is easily extra 3" of space above/below my head/feet. And the full DeepSleep setup allows you to be at a slight angle.
