Ford has adopted this philosophy on their new vehicles. Not sure if other manufacturers do it as well.

From what I remember, and other discussions and on other forums, it was due to carbon monoxide poisoning and lawsuits.

One guy on his F-150 tapped into some wires with a toggle switch so he could control the recirc with or without the button.

Others have said that the way it works is a humidity sensor up somewhere around the auxiliary switches. The recirc button turning back off is not some random timing thing, but actually a sensor of some sort.

Some folks can't keep theirs on more than 30 seconds, other folks can leave theirs on for a while. It all depends on your environment at the time.

As a matter of fact, the other day I had my AC on (not max) with the auto set to level 2 and I noticed that the Bronco kept the recirc on. Of course it was 109° outside :)

I think this option on air recirculation is ridiculous. I don't like smelling gasoline and diesel fumes from other vehicles. This is terrible driving in town. It should never have been put into this system. I have COPD so you can imagine the effect it has on me.
