I live in the Hudson valley in New York. I’m looking to try my first off road with my Wildtrak. I’m looking for a trail wide enough that I don’t scratch it all up no fun in that. Anyone have any recommendations?

I don’t live in NY any longer so I can’t put out any personal recommendations, but

There are quite a few apps you can get that show trails nearby. OnX Offroad, Gaia, and Trails Offroad are the big names - most offer a free trial of some sort, and provide some relative indication of how difficult a trail may be

If you don’t want to get any scratches, probably shouldn’t go off-road.

It will happen. They’ll generally be light enough that nobody will really notices unless they are looking for them on a perfectly clean vehicle.

But again, it will happen.

Check out the OnX app. You can do a free trial to see if it's something you will use/like.

I took my first real off road adventure with a group a week ago and "earned" my pinstripes. They happen, unfortunately, when you get into tight places. I want to keep my Wildtrak looking great too, but I do want to enjoy it as well. So off i go to see what I can buff out and hopefully hit wider trails next go around :) Enjoy and good luck!

Don’t do that.

You can only buff out scratches so many times.

Just leave it, and if need be, buff it out before you sell it.

Or don’t - and just trade it in on a cloudy day in winter with a light dusting of road grime.

In some cases, you could be breaking the law if you start performing your own trail clearing service.
You are not wrong

I'll second that!
I should clarify my 2nd on a saw - a small handsaw to clear away something obstructing the path is what I meant, not making your own trail or making the trail wider.

Ohh no worries, I'm not talking a full out buffing to take a layer of clear coat off, just a little hand polishing. That probably sounded much more dramatic than it should have from my end now that i reread it! Thanks for your concern and warning! :)

I'll be keeping my Bronco " 'till the wheels fall off" so I'm not worried about selling it.

This is the way.

Don't go out trying to widen a dirt bike trail for your Bronco or anything, and definitely don't go trying to blaze a new path -- but if there's deadfall in the middle or a bit of new growth creeping in the edges of an otherwise well establish 4x4 trail, I've never had a ranger say anything about clearing that so you don't scratch your rig up... and the folks behind you will probably thank you.

OnX does mark the difference between trails rated for regular roads, 4x4s/High Clearance vehicles only, side by sides/ATVs, dirt bikes, and foot/horse trails.

Trust, but verify.

Both Gaia and OnX aren’t perfect when it comes to identifying where you can go.

I’ve had On X have a trail routing that included a segment that was not legal per the US Forest Service. I’ve had Gaia show a road that was gated private property.

If you go into a USNF, get an official map that shows the legal routes and stick to them.
