I swear, people will complain about the smallest inconvenience.

I have to press a button to turn off AS/S in the Bronco. Takes 5 SECONDS for me when it shuts off the first time after it's warmed up and I stop at a light, and wonder why my vehicle suddenly turned itself off...

Manufacturers just need to update their software to allow the computer to remember the last setting. They don't need to eliminate the feature. If you want to use it, all the better and all good. But if you don't want to use it all the time, then you shouldn't have to be forced to turn it off all the time. I know it's easy as pie for us to turn it off. I think Ford actually paid attention to where they put the button to make it as easy as a finger flip when putting the car into gear. But there are many others out there that aren't quite so easy.

Ironic: How many cars out there with ASS roaming the streets at night with nothing more than their day time running lights on in the front with totally clueless drivers. They might save $5 in gas over the next two years from ASS, assuming they're still amongst us by then...

I did not know he had returned. Perhaps he will get the original (uncensored) version of his and Yates review of the SRT-10 pickup (2004) but back on C and Ds website. The edited version up now is still hilarious, but not as good as the original.

Regardless, it will take more than Phillips to correct that culture I think.

Yates was another great writer. I forgot about that SRT-10 review - that's one of the C&D issues I still have and it was fun to read again in its original version.

I remember Phillips' Cadillac EXT review disappeared from their website shortly after it was published. No doubt Cadillac was very unhappy and made them remove it. It only reappeared maybe 5 years ago.

The best one was the 1968 "Opel Kadett Assassination" article written by David E. Davis Jr....he did the review in a junk yard. Truly a witty and inspired piece that pissed GM off so much that they cancelled their advertising in Car and Driver magazine as a result.

I do enjoy John Phillips' writing style too.....classic!

I never read that Opel Kadett review before. That was good! "A rolling potpourri of mediocrity" is how I feel about most Toyotas. That was definitely a car assassination. Oh, there's those letters again, "ass..." so I guess were still on-topic.

Any public responses are going to be tuned to at least not offend the current administration in power. Ford’s statement reads as a bit of an ass-kiss to President Trump and Administrator Zeldin. The situation is complex with a lot of factors to consider, so quick decisions and changes are unlikely.

I haven’t had any problems with C&D, but I avoid MotorTrend. MotorTrend put out a vomit-inducing puff piece and video “review” on the 2025 Cadillac Celestiq. I learned to pay attention to and look for the good writers who don‘t just regurgitate OEM’s marketing BS. I am happy that C&D brought back John Phillips recently — in 2002 John wrote a CLASSIC review about the Cadillac Escalade EXT.

The "public responses" I was referring to were the "public responses made by the manufacturers" to C&D. The JohnQPublic's responses are certainly less...careful...and more honest.

I agree ideally, the system should allow you to make a selection and have that selection persist across key cycles until the driver changes it. The question is how does it get tested for fuel economy if it doesn't always default to on.

I haven't read the procedure but according to this C&D article, it could be tested both with it on and with it off, and then the results are averages so at least the manufacturer gets some credit for making the system available.

Here’s why the Ass button is in the radio control area. Start the Bronco, grab the auto trans selector, (probably true about MT too) and stick out your finger. Muscle memory. Or at least finger memory.
