Glued rubber flooring remnant piece from our gym onto pre-cut (Home Depot), 2' x 4', 1/2" thick, high density fiberboard. Trimmed edges of board with black Gorilla tape to prevent edges from scratching cargo area. Left an edge along left side of shelf so it fits under the electrical area shown in the photo. Rubber helps to keep things from sliding and water/moisture off fiberboard. Excluding the rubber remnant piece I already had, materials cost only $40. The fiberboard seems to be more sturdy than similar size plywood. Hope this gives you some ideas.

Great hack!
I might suggest priming that thing to seal it up. Humidity from climate and A/C are going to cause some significant bowing even in.

Great idea! I'll have to use this for a floor panel for a 2dr rear seat delete. Currently using a rubber mat but too much flopping around with top off. Need this kind of weight and texture. Thanks!
