My 2.3 has an annoying rattle/tick on cold start that fluctuates with rpms. Goes away once warm but drives me absolutely insane, it’s like the perfect pitch to drill right into my head. Got a little quieter after my first oil change… I think, willing to be imagining that. I hate it so much.

Anyway, nothing like this. I cannot imagine this is normal and even if under warranty it would drive me crazy. Sorry if I missed it but any mods that you know of on there? Can’t always tell of course but curious. Maybe the tech’s goldfish died that morning or something and he was having a bad day.

Given the cold weather we are experiencing, your ticking is most likely just the valves ticking until the oil warms up. Since I park my Bronco outside, this winter I have been warming my engine up until the ticking is gone and then driving slow until it warms up more.
