I am running the Ford Performance Bilsteins with Dobinson's coilovers with 36.5 inch BF goodrichs and they had been working great for me for sometime. I had some overlanding gear too on my bronco earlier (about 70 lbs) that I have since removed. Recently I developed back issues and noticed that the pain keeps coming back everytime I drive. Now my commute for work is 50 miles every day so was thinking of more comfortable options. I have a set of ICON CDEV shocks that I bought but never got the opportunity to install because coundnt be confident on any shop that was equally good on the mechanical as well as electrical stuff. However now I am thinking of changing over to CDEV and running them at the plushiest at 1 when I am commuting. But then ICON's have a reputation for being firm and digressive just like the bilstein and probably more so. So asking the hive if anyone has experience running the CDEVs at their plushiest and whether its softer or at least similar to OEM. Really at this point the pain is such that I would actually appreciate as soft as the ride can get.

Speaking as someone with all sorts of back issues, every time I've had trouble driving it comes down to driving position vice vehicle ride.

You may want to try to raise or lower the front of the seat prior to changing suspension as a spacer is a lot less expensive as a first step. There is a company that sells seat risers, and several members have posted about using fender washers or other home made spacers to solve the issue with uncomfortable seating.

The seats are orthopedically garbage ...somthing youd find in 1960s Fiat.

Also consider retrofiitiig Volvo seats so you can keep airbags and sensors. Besides cusrom seats like Scheel-Mann this is the best option and likely far cheaper.

I have ICON CDCV Front and HD coils in the rear, feel great at middle of the road setting.

I think your problem is addressed above...seating position is going to be the largest contributor to back issues, unless your commute looks like the Baja500.

Do you have added weight on the back constantly?

Affirmative:
Kuat v2 swing out: 40
Northshore Bike Rack: 50
Ez4x4 Trunk: 60ish
Ez4x4 Drawer: 30ish
Tools/bike gear 15ish

So that's about 200lbs over or behind the rear axle. Add on bikes at 35ea, although it is mostly just one these days...

Rides great! The constant weight on there is one of the reasons I sold a set of Hoss3.0 takeoffs, just figured given the position sensitive damping I'd be better off with Icon HD.
Pic below is day of and wo the top, doesn't sit quite as tall now!

One last question. so you meant that the icons do have position-sensitive damping and are not just plain digressive right? I am going to call icon but being in calfornia they are all closed up at the moment.

Yes ... Perplexity sums it up better than I would :
Yes, ICON shocks equipped with CDCV (Compression Damping Control Valve) technology generally feature position-sensitive damping via a built-in "Bump Zone". The CDCV itself is a user-adjustable knob for overall damping, while the internal structure, specifically on piggyback and remote reservoir models, adds 20% more damping force in the final stages of compression to prevent harsh bottoming.

Key Details on ICON CDCV and Position Sensitivity
Internal Bump Zone: ICON's 2.5 and 3.0 Series shocks (including those with CDCV) use a machined manifold to create a "Bump Zone," a position-sensitive feature that increases damping force during the last 40% of shock travel.
CDCV Function: The CDCV knob acts as a mid-speed adjuster, restricting or allowing oil flow into the reservoir, allowing the driver to change the overall compression stiffness from soft to firm.
Position Sensitivity: This means the shock gets stiffer only as it approaches full compression, providing a soft ride for small bumps but firm control during hard hits.

While the CDCV is primarily a compression adjuster rather than a velocity-sensitive valve, it works in conjunction with ICON's position-sensitive internal valving

So yeah, position sensitive but also progressive towards end of stroke. HD springs get you more support off the bat.
