It's been many moons, but we briefly analyzed sines waves in AC Theory in our apprenticeship class. Solving for RMS voltage or phase/angle relationship in 3-phase systems...etc etc

It's been many moons, but we briefly analyzed sines waves in AC Theory in our apprenticeship class. Solving for RMS voltage or phase/angle relationship in 3-phase systems...etc etc

High school math students constantly ask, "When will I ever use this?" when they just don't want to learn stuff. I always answer, "You? Never." (Learned that from a colleague.)

Except when we get to sine waves.

They're the only functions we cover that mathematicians use the real-world common names for stuff like "Phase Shift" and "Amplitude" and "frequency" instead of just math speak like "horizontal translation" and "vertical scaling".

So we get to talk about cool stuff that teenagers actually care about like how noise-canceling headphones work. And colors and music and earthquakes.
