Is License plate lighting required?

Is it required? My OEM plastic bumper doesn't have license plate lighting, so I'm wondering if it's really required.

All OEM rear bumpers have a license plate light as far as I know.. pretty sure it’s a law in most, if not all, states.

From the Washington vehicle code:

§ 74.05 TAIL LIGHT; ILLUMINATION OF REAR LICENSE PLATE.

(2) Either a tail light or a separate light shall be so constructed and placed as to illuminate with a white light the rear registration plate, when such registration plate is required, and render it legible from a distance of 50 feet to the rear. Any tail light, together with any separate light for illuminating the rear registration plate, shall be so wired as to be lighted whenever the headlights or auxiliary driving lights are lighted, except where separate lighting systems are provided for trailers for the purpose of illuminating such registration plate.

My plastic rear bumper has an LED light. Maybe the factory accidentally forgot to plug yours in?

My plastic bumper didn't have any license plate light at all. I replaced the bumper and relocated the license plate. Was just wondering if I really had to write up lights for it. Guess I better do it just in case. Thanks all for the clarification!
