What the heck is this thing?

It's an OBD2 port lock. Prevents people from hooking into the onboard diagnostics port under your dash and programming a new key fob.

I wrapped my spare fobs in aluminum foil. Cheaper than a faraday pouch/box and just as effective. At night, where I keep my keys is 10 feet away from an outside wall.

If you don’t use the fob to lock/unlock can the fob still be copied by whatever tools the thief would be using sitting a few yards away out of sight?

By not using the fob I am saying use the lock button on the handle to lock and just let the proximity unlock when you touch the handle.
