Is it better to :

1) Take the steering wheel off and ship it to an expert to wrap, or

2) Just go buy the leather you like and find a local upolstery shop?

* I think its sort of a specialized art to get it done right.

Anybody have an amazing contact that does this?

A month ago or there about, Lakeland Ford parts dept was selling the leather wrapped SW's. At the time they were like $250.

Option #2 would just be to buy the factory leather-wrapped steering wheel from the dealer’s part counter. Every trim (except base) has a leather-wrapped steering wheel.

Which is exactly what I did on my Ford Focus SE. Apparently the plastics Ford used back then start falling apart right around the 10-year-old mark. And the factory plastic steering wheel in my Focus SE started disintegrating in my hands as I drove it. Ended up replacing it with the leather-wrapped version from the Ford Focus Titanium.

BUT to answer your question, yes there is a certain art to getting it installed and looking good. My uncle used to be a leather worker, and steering wheels is one of the custom things he did. He tried showing me how to do it once, and I just couldn’t get it to look right to be honest. (Unfortunately, my uncle is now retired and arthritic, otherwise I would recommend him.)

Amazon has DIY leather wrap kits and YouTube has videos.

Never done it but it looks really simple.

After futher consideration :

Im really interested in a specific type of leather and stitching and want to find a specialist.

I would look around for someone near you who does either custom leather work or an automotive upholsterer. They should be able to help you out.

Side note, wrapping a steering wheel is not as easy as it looks. It takes time to do it right and make it look good in the end. Those DIY Amazon kits are mostly garbage and even if you had the patience to try it yourself the end result wouldn’t be anywhere near as good as a professional job.

I did a DIY Amazon leather stitch/wrap on my old Tundra maybe a year orso ago. I thought it was going to be easy, and I guess it was if I was able to get it done, but it was pretty time intensive and not the most entertaining project at all.

Stitching it all was pretty painstaking, and even with a wrap cut specifically for my vehicle I wasn't completely thrilled with the fitment around the difficult parts of the wheel. While I'd love to color match the leather wrap of my steering wheel to my brown/black seats, I don't relish the idea of having to do that again.
