Hey guys, quick question. For those who have built or bought lifts for the clamshell, does the tailgate HAVE to be open when lifting the clamshell off the bronco? I haven’t been able to find a definitive answer.

thanks!

I would say yes because you have to have the back window up.

I think @FleshTuxedo is right

But the more I think about it, I’m not sure there is a latch between the glass and the tailgate (and I’m not about to go look because that would spoil the fun)

Is there anything preventing the closed glass from lifting off the backswing gate? Could you open the back, unbolt the roof, close it back up, back up into the waaaaaay back of your garage, and then hoist the roof off with the glass and door closed?

No. I have the lift from Lange and the tailgate and back windo do not have to be open if you are using that lift system.

Hmmmm. I'm not sure about the glass/tailgate situation. The glass has to be closed first when closing the tailgate to form a seal. My guess is that if you hoisted it with both closed, the glass would hang up on the closed tailgate. Maybe back it up and the tailgate slightly open? I'll test it when I get home.

I use a pulley lift sys and uneven lift would break the glass if it was closed. Sounds like hoist may be diff.
