7 speed on windy days is sometimes less than easy to tell when to shift because you can’t hear the stock exhaust. So I found another stock muffler on FB marketplace for free to cut open and see what could be done. Here is the stock muffler cut open:
As you can see, exhaust is forced through 3 very restrictive holes and also through a labyrinth of approx 2” tubes that lead to a normally closed spring loaded valve. 2 holes are roughly 1/2” and one 3/4”. The exhaust exits through a big roughly 3” inside diameter straight through glass pack bullet after all this. So what I decided to do was this: Torched out the valve area so the exhaust has a free path to the glasspack and closed the top and welded it all back together.
It sounds PERFECT it’s just baaaarely louder than stock. When cold it makes a little bit of decel noise and free revs sound like a stock focus rs or mustang ecoboost basically. Taking a video in a minute and reserving first comment for the video. This is quieter than any aftermarket exhaust but still louder than stock with just a touch of a deeper tone that makes it easier to drive with a stick over the wind sound on windy days! Wife says she can’t tell a difference lol
VIDEO SOUND CLIPS
It pops a lot if you rev it cold like first video. Drove it 3 hours ago so it’s almost completely cold when started (I don’t recommend cold revs but did it for you guys) added interior warmed up driving around parking lot and warmed up start and revs
