Hey all. I'm going to big bend national park next year and wanted to get a mounted fuel tank for additional capacity on the trip. I am not looking to spend too much (hopefully under $250) and was hoping to get some recommendations on how y'all mount your fuel tanks. I don't have a roof rack so I was thinking probably something on the tire or rear. Thanks!

Would that need a spare tire reinforcement? I have stock 35s on right now.
It would help. But also if you got a reinforcement like Hammerbuilt it has a rotopax mount option and you could skip the strap on mount. That's what I use.

Interesting. I'm looking at it now. So help me understand, it requires the $215 mount, and then the $100 tailgate support accessory arm, plus a rotopax all purchased separately correct?

Yes it adds up pretty fast. I think to keep your budget you'll have to look at knock offs. Amazon has some inexpensive rotopax style containers and spare reinforcements.

I've been to Big Bend dozens of times. Never felt the need for extra gas. There are two gas stations within the Park. Now, if you're talking the state park, then yeah bring extra gas. There's nothing there.

I do. Bag has held up well and the 2 cans fit nice and snug, side by side.
400 miles across washboards of Mojave and Death Valley last month.

So much better than $500!

Agreed. For a "just in case" and rarely packed item (really didn't even end up needing for last trip) its an affordable way to go.
Just saw these gas cans at Target for $12.19 each btw. Looked like regular price. Puts this setup around $75
Disclaimer: With both full, It's around 26 lbs plus weight of bag. I added too much firewood on bottom of bag last trip and my tailgate definitely felt it. Keep it to just the 2 full cans and some lightweight trash and should be fine.

Yeah, I’ve been seeing the factory tailgate can hold 133lbs. The Sasquatch wheel/tire combo is 87lbs. And that leaves 46lbs. I’d have to look at my excel document but fuel is like 6lbs/gal and water 8.34lbs/gal.

All looks correct to me.
I’d limit it to 35 max. My tailgate wasn’t off this much prior to run.
